The Terminology Confusion — Explained

Many students get confused by Spanish immigration terms. Here’s the plain-English breakdown:

Spanish TermWhat It MeansWhen You Use It
Prórroga de estanciaExtension of current stayStaying in same program, same school, continuing studies
RenovaciónRenewal (informal term, same as prórroga)Used interchangeably with prórroga in practice
Modificación de estanciaChange of study stay conditionsChanging school, changing program type, adding work permission
Modificación de residenciaChange to work permitAfter graduation, transitioning to employment

The bottom line: If you’re continuing to study in Spain and just need more time, you file a prórroga de estancia por estudios. This is what most students call a “renewal” or “extension” — and for this guide, we’ll use those terms interchangeably.

Do You Need to Extend?

SituationWhat to Do
Same school, continuing same programPrórroga (extension)
Switching to a different school in SpainModificación (change of conditions)
Switching from language course to universityModificación
Adding work permission to existing visaModificación
Finished studies, want to stay for workModificación → work permit or job-seeker visa
Finished studies, want to leave SpainNothing — visa expires naturally

When to Apply

The application window is:

  • Earliest: 60 days before your current authorization expires
  • Latest: 90 days after your authorization expires

Recommended: Apply 30–45 days before expiry. This gives time to gather documents, book the appointment, and submit without rushing — while not submitting so early that you need new documents later.

What Happens If You Miss the Window?

TimingStatus
Applied within the window✅ Legal stay continues while processing
Applied up to 90 days after expiry🟡 Irregular stay, but application still accepted — get it in ASAP
Applied more than 90 days after expiry❌ Cannot extend; must leave Spain and reapply from home country

2026 Rules: What’s Changed

Key updates that took effect from 2025–2026:

  1. Academic progress is now verified — You must demonstrate genuine study progress (attendance records, grades, exam participation). Extensions are no longer automatic for students who are enrolled but not attending.

  2. Language course renewals are limited — Students on language courses (not degree programs) can renew a maximum of once. On renewal, you must show:

    • Certificate of completed course
    • Proof of DELE or SIELE exam registration (or results)
  3. Medical certificate required — A medical certificate (as with the original application) must be re-submitted if your extension is for a new year.

  4. Digital submission in some regions — Catalonia and some regions now accept online submissions via the Sede Electrónica. Check your province’s immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) for current options.

Document Checklist for Extension (Prórroga)

  • EX-00 form — completed and signed
  • Valid passport — original + copy of all pages
  • Current TIE card — original + copy (front and back)
  • Proof of continued enrollment — letter from your school confirming you are enrolled for the next period
  • Academic progress documentation — attendance records, grades, or course completion certificate
  • Proof of financial means — €600/month for the extended period (bank statements, scholarship, sponsorship)
  • Valid health insurance — same requirements as original application (€30,000 minimum, no co-payment)
  • Medical certificate — issued within 3 months by a licensed doctor
  • Proof of accommodation — rental contract or student residence confirmation for the extended period
  • Modelo 790 Código 052 — the immigration fee payment form (~€16.80 for the administrative fee)
  • Receipt of previous TIE — to confirm continuity of status

For Language Course Renewal (If Renewing a Second Time)

  • Course completion certificate from previous enrollment
  • DELE/SIELE exam registration or certificate

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Confirm Your Expiry Date

Check the expiry date on your TIE card. Count back 30–45 days — that’s your target submission date.

Step 2: Get Your School Documentation

Contact your school’s administrative office to request an enrollment continuation letter. Allow 5–10 working days.

Step 3: Update Your Financial Proof

Get current bank statements (within 30 days of application), scholarship renewal letters, or updated sponsorship letters.

Step 4: Renew Your Health Insurance

Most insurers allow annual renewal. Ensure the new certificate covers the full extended period.

Step 5: Pay the Modelo 790 Fee

Download Modelo 790 Código 052 from the Spanish Tax Agency website. Pay at any Spanish bank branch. Keep the stamped receipt.

Step 6: Book Your Appointment (Cita Previa)

Go to the Sede Electrónica (sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es) → Extranjería → book a cita previa at your local Oficina de Extranjería.

Barcelona note: The Oficina de Extranjería in Barcelona is notoriously busy. Book your appointment as early as possible — slots are often 3–6 weeks out.

Step 7: Submit Documents in Person

Attend your appointment with all originals and copies. Submit documents and receive your resguardo (submission receipt). This document proves your legal stay while the application is processed.

Step 8: Wait for Resolution

Processing time: typically 1–3 months. You will be notified by email or postal letter.

Step 9: Collect New TIE Card

Once approved, you’ll be notified to book an appointment to collect your new TIE card at the local police station (Comisaría).

Costs

ItemCost
Modelo 790 Código 052 (extension fee)~€16.80
Health insurance renewal (annual)€360–960/year
Document translation (if needed)€50–100
Total (approx)€430–1,080/year

What If Your Extension Is Denied?

Denial reasons are stated in writing. Common reasons:

  1. Insufficient academic progress — not attending, no exam participation
  2. Missing or expired documents — medical certificate outdated, insurance expired
  3. Insufficient funds — bank account below required minimum
  4. School not authorised — institution lost its accreditation

Your options after denial:

  • Appeal (recurso de alzada) — within 1 month of denial notice, submitted to the same office
  • Administrative appeal (recurso contencioso-administrativo) — courts; requires a lawyer
  • Leave Spain — if you choose not to appeal

Switching from Extension to Work Permission

If you want to work full-time after graduating, you need to modify your status rather than extend it. See our dedicated guide: How to Switch from Student Visa to Work Permit in Spain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between visa extension and renewal in Spain?

In Spain's immigration system, both terms refer to the same process: prórroga de estancia por estudios (extension of study stay). You apply to continue your studies each year. There is no separate 'renewal visa' — you extend your existing authorization while staying in Spain.

When should I apply for my student visa extension in Spain?

Apply no earlier than 60 days before your current authorization expires, and no later than 90 days after it expires. The safest window is 30–45 days before expiry.

Can I stay in Spain while my extension application is being processed?

Yes. Submitting a timely application (before or up to 90 days after expiry) automatically extends your legal stay until a decision is made. Keep your submission receipt (resguardo) as proof.

What happens if my student visa extension is denied?

You have the right to appeal (recurso de alzada) within 1 month of the denial. If you don't appeal, you must leave Spain. A denial is usually for missing documents or insufficient academic progress — review the specific reason before appealing.

Can I extend my student visa after graduation?

No. Once your program ends, you cannot extend under the student visa category. You can apply to switch to a work permit, job-seeker visa, or leave Spain. See our guide on switching from student visa to work permit.
